Search the World

Explore Over 4000 Resources

Citavi provides you access to world-class databases and library catalogs. You can even use each online resource‘s specific search options — a feature exclusive to Citavi.

Search databases from major information providers (OCLC, EBSCO, Ovid, ProQuest,  Elsevier, Thomson Reuters, etc.); in WorldCat, the world’s largest online catalog; in university, national, and combined library catalogs, and in bookseller websites such as Amazon.

Search Your Library

Can you search your library catalog from within Citavi? We continually add additional online resources and gladly accept suggestions for new ones.

→ Check whether your library catalog is available in Citavi.

Check Availability

Citavi saves call numbers for items in your library. When you import references from other sources, Citavi can check if they are available in your library or through interlibrary loan.

Manage References

Add References by Hand

Citavi's 35 reference types help you capture the bibliographic information relevant to each of your sources. But you almost never need to do it manually...

Add References Automatically

Just enter an ISBN number, DOI name, or PubMed ID, and Citavi retrieves the bibliographic information for you, along with the cover art, abstract, and keywords, if available.

Add References with the Picker

If you find information online, you can use the Picker to add references with just a click. → Learn more.

The Reference Editor

Add References
with a Bar Code Scanner

You can probably find a bar code scanner program in your smartphone's app store. These can save a list of ISBN numbers which you can then import in Citavi.

Import with Ease

Quickly import references from other reference management programs (EndNote, RefWorks, etc.) and from Web-based resources in RIS, EndNote Tagged, and BibTeX formats. Naturally you can export to these formats as well.

Eliminate Duplicates

When importing references, Citavi checks to see if they are already in your project and identifies duplicates.

Import Bibliographic Information
from PDFs

You can import a folder of PDFs and Citavi automatically adds each as a reference and looks up the bibliographic information.

Integrate PDFs and Other Documents

Find Full Text

Let Citavi find and download the full text of journal and newspaper articles from the Internet.

Take a Look in the Preview

Use the preview to view nearly all types of files:  PDFs, Web pages, Word and Writer documents, images, videos, and presentations. For documents with smaller type or computers with smaller displays, you can easily zoom in or resize the preview.

Save Documents in the Citavi Folder

Citavi can save all documents directly in the Citavi project folder. Everything in one place — that makes creating backups easier and helps when it is time to move your projects to a new computer.

Save Web Pages as PDF

You can tell Citavi to save a Web page that's open in the preview as a PDF. This is also saved in the project folder.

Organize Knowledge

Citavi offers something extraordinary:
The Knowledge Organizer.

The Knowledge Organizer

Structure Your Work

The category system makes it easy to systematically structure research proposals and publications and is especially useful for outlining a term project, thesis, or dissertation.

Create a Compilation

No more writer’s block! Saving or printing a list of your quotations and thoughts gives you a quick overview of how far along you are in your project.

Cultivate and Organize

Add direct and indirect quotations, comments, summaries, and your own thoughts directly to Citavi. This knowledge base grows in value with each new quotation and thought you save and is always at hand for future projects.

Citavi gives you two tools for organizing and structuring your collected knowledge: conventional keywording and a hierarchical category system — another Citavi exclusive. Both keywords and categories can be changed at any time

Work with Word, Writer, TeX, etc.

An upcoming Add-In for Microsoft Word will provide even better integration.

Format Your Manuscript

Citavi automatically generates a finished publication, inserting properly-formatted citations and a bibliography in the chosen citation style.

Work in a Team

Do you want to create a departmental repository of documents that can be worked on concurrently?

Do you want to work with your colleagues to create a research proposal?

Are you planning a group publication?

Then try Citavi Team.

Collaborate on a local network

Citavi Team is a → special edition of Citavi that allows you to work with others on shared projects at the same time on a local network. Offsite users can log in with a VPN to access team projects.

Read or Edit

Team members can be assigned  the role of reader or editor for each project. Citavi Team users can be assigned the editor role, while users of → Citavi Pro or Reader can be assigned the reader role.

Teamwork Your Way

You decide how you want to collaborate.

For example, companies, institutes, or departments can use Citavi Team to create a repository of journal articles and documentation that all members can use for their individual work.

Team members can also collaborate more closely by sharing the work of evaluating and analyzing full texts, assigning tasks, sharing comments, ratings, and recommendations, and using Citavi as a knowledge base for shared projects.

For very large projects, you need appropriately powerful hardware. On computers with less than
4 GB of RAM, we recommend a maximum of 20,000 references per project.

Example of working in a team

Try out Team features with Citavi Free or Citavi Pro, and create Team Projects with up to 100 references (→ technical requirements).

→ Purchase Citavi Team or obtain an upgrade.
